General Job Description

Performs skilled work in preparing surfaces for painting and in applying all types of paint to machinery, equipment, furniture, and interiors and exteriors of buildings by brush or spray gun. Customarily works from oral or written instructions. May mix and match colors and paints, in which case colors are usually checked by the foreperson prior to application. Work is inspected in progress and at completion.

Essential Job Functions

(1) Scrapes, sands and tapes surfaces prior to painting. (2) Mixes, matches, and applies paints, varnishes, shellacs, enamels and other finishes. (3) Checks conditions of woodwork, noting need for carpentry repairs. (4) Cleans and cares for brushes, spray guns and other equipment. (5) Erects or rigs scaffolds, covers woodwork and/or moves furniture to protect it from paint. (6) Removes spattered paint when job is completed.

Non-Essential Job Functions

Performs other work related to painting procedures when required, such as taping and floating sheetrock.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

(1) Considerable knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools, equipment and materials of the painting trade. (2) Considerable knowledge of the proper preparation of surfaces to be painted, of the proper method of mixing and matching all types of paints, and the adaptability of various surface materials. (3) Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the painting trade. (4) Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. (5) Skill in mixing paints and in matching and blending colors. (6) Skill in applying paints and other finishes with brushes and spray machines.

Physical Demands

Physical abilities sufficient to perform assigned duties.

Required Education

Must possess ability to read, write and perform simple computations.

Required Experience and Training

One to two years experience as a painter.

Special Conditions for Eligibility

This is a security-sensitive position subject to criminal record check. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing. This is an IT-sensitive position subject to SFA’s computer and network security policy.

Min Pay Rate $13.00

Mid Pay Rate

Salary Information Hiring Salary - $13.00/hr

Specific Job Requirements/Duties for this Posting

Must have painting and supervisory experience. This painting will include, but is not limited to, machinery, equipment, furniture and interior/exterior of buildings.

Benefit and Retirement Eligibility

This position is eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
