This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART)position. ARTs are part of the regular career civil service and enjoy all the benefits granted to Federal employees in the competitive civil service. In addition, ARTs are required to maintain their active membership in the AF Reserve unit where assigned. ARTs receive on average one weekend of military training per month.

Responsibilities
  • The primary purpose of this position is: To repair, overhaul, rebuild, modify, test, troubleshoot, remove, replace, align, calibrate, inspect and mate avionics integrated electronic systems.
  • Serves as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) providing training to reservists in the accomplishment of tasks herein.
  • THE HOURLY RATE FOR THIS POSITION IS: $29.78 - $34.79
  • Installs, modifies overhauls, maintains, troubleshoots repairs, rebuilds, aligns, and calibrates electronic systems, components, or subassemblies.
  • Performs pretest, operational (functional), or final testing of electronic systems, components, or subassemblies.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures, complies with security regulations, directives, and policies, and maintains a safe and clean work area.
  • Uses and maintains tools and test equipment required to accomplish duties: Ensures tools are properly marked, calibrated (if necessary), and are secured when area is unattended.
  • Prepares effective training plans to maximize Reserve training. Certifies work produced under the USAF Technical Order Program.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: The following summarizes the qualification standard for this position found in the Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations (Handbook X-118C); for additional information click www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/classification-qualifications/federal-wage-system-qualifications/#url=Overview. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the {fill in appropriate standard such as WG-4800 General Equipment Maintenance Family, WG-8800 Aircraft Overhaul Family, etc.}. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

SCREEN-OUT:Ability to do the work of an Electronic Integrated Systems Mechanic with little or no supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS:Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of electronic theories and practices of one or more complex integrated systems such as fire control, inertial navigation, or automatic landing control systems; of integrated electronic, pneumatic, hydraulic, optical, and mechanical systems; of such applications as radar, digital or analog computers, digital display devices, and of the technology and practices which integrate these components into a total functional system; and of mathematics including algebra and basic trigonometric functions to adapt standard function to the specific requirements of the integrated systems. 2. Skill in the use of standard hand and power tools of the electronics trade. 3. Skill in the set up and operation of computer control led automated test equipment (A TE) and test stands, oscilloscopes (dual trace, storage, digitized), spectrum, network and distortion analyzers, frequency counters, and signal generators; in interpreting complex drawings, specifications, and schematics of complete integrated systems to recognize the function and interconnections of components. assemblies. subassemblies. and connecting cable harness; and in troubleshooting, installing, repairing, and maintaining electronic integrated systems where circuit theory must be used to understand the operation of a large number of circuits and functions, and the interaction of subsystems which create malfunctions. 4. Ability to read and interpret a variety of technical data such as schematic diagrams, blueprints and technical orders relating to the electronics trade. 5. Comprehensive knowledge of operation, capabilities and limitations of complex electronic systems complicated by a variety of multi component assemblies and devices. 6. Ability to use a variety of electronic, electrical, or electromechanical test and measurement equipment. 7. Ability to interpret and comply with regulations and instructions on security, safety, documentation, and other publications governing the performance of duties. 8. Ability to effectively communicate with workers and supervisors in English using both oral and written reports. 9. Basic computer skills are required. Individual must be able to access and use computer based maintenance documentation and supply systems, and be capable of assimilating training on new systems as they are developed and implemented 10. Knowledge of USAF Technical Order Program and its procedures. 11. Ability to clean work area and/or job site upon completion of work

FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical effort involves lifting components and equipment and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Items lifted generally weigh up to 40 pounds and occasionally objects weighing in excess of 40 pounds. Requires a high degree of manual dexterity, eye to hand coordination, prolonged standing, walking, and normal color vision.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Work is performed inside in a shop environment and outside on the aircraft, subject to inclement weather. Mechanics are subject to injuries such as cuts and bruises and may be subject to danger from exposure to hazardous materials, high pressure air, high noise level, electrical shock, RF radiation, and burns from soldering irons.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This is an Air Reserve Technician (ART) position. ARTs are eligible for 15 days active duty tour each year for which military leave is granted with full civilian pay. Air Reserve units and members; are subject to immediate call to active duty in mobilization to meet a national emergency. For additional information regarding ART positions and/or military qualifications, please call 1-800-257-1212. Retired military are usually ineligible for membership in the AF Reserve. Retired military that have active AF Reserve assignments may apply provided they show assignment (position) on the application.
