Description

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.

Metra's Engineering Department is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metra's fixed assets, such as buildings, stations, bridges, track, electrical, telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects and Communications and Maintenance. The department is staffed by more than 700 employees.

Reporting to the Director, Electrical Engineering, the Manager, Mechanical Engineering oversees design and construction management projects of mechanical systems at Metra's facilities ensuring compliance with Metra standards and federal, state, and local codes and regulations. Supervise the preparation of mechanical design packages including specifications, drawings, construction cost estimates, technical calculations, scope, schedule, and budgets for the procurement of mechanical design, systems, and construction projects. Participate in the contract award process; review designs, technical drawings, and specifications for accuracy and compliance with federal and municipal regulations and codes, as well as design standards; and negotiate costs. Coordinate and monitor the work of contractors ensuring services are delivered on time, within budget, and according to specifications; assist in resolving construction problems; prepare contract modifications; and inspect completed work for compliance with Quality Assurance/Quality Control standards.

Prepare designs and material and cost estimates for the installation and repair of mechanical equipment to be performed in-house. Lead mechanical engineering teams in testing and assessing equipment for state of good repair, resolving construction and design issues, and recommending and overseeing equipment repair, maintenance, and/or replacement based on cost efficiencies. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Employees may perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.

  • In addition to #1, must have seven (7) years of Mechanical Engineering experience with an emphasis in thermodynamics and or heat transfer (conduction, convection, and radiation), fluid mechanics, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning of buildings, and energy conversion. Three (3) of the years must include indirect supervisory experience that may encompass day-to day employee or consultant/contractor management, assigning tasks, providing guidance and training, and monitoring performance.

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, theories, and methods of mechanical engineering.

  • Considerable knowledge of mechanical systems design, installation, and maintenance.

  • Considerable knowledge of project management principles.

  • Considerable knowledge of Quality Assurance and Quality Control principles.

  • Good knowledge of applicable safety rules and protocols.

  • Good project management skills.

  • Good analytical, planning, and organizational skills.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills for interfacing with various departments, railroads, vendors, and governmental agencies.

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Proficiency in the use of Auto CADD or Micro station.

  • Ability to interpret and apply applicable federal, state, and local codes and regulations.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, establish priorities meet deadlines, and adjust to changing priorities.

  • Ability to perform site and equipment inspections.

  • Must be willing to travel within Metra‚Äôs 6-county region.

  • Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.

  • Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.

Preferences:

  • Experience working in the transportation industry.

  • Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering (PEME)
